Here are some reading related activities that you can do at home:

a.  Setting the table.  (involves directions of left and right, following a pattern concept.
b.  Any type of cooking activity.  (reading and math are both involved)
c.  Sorting clothes. (matching and counting skills)
d.  Using a keyboard. (helps in identification of letters, reading, spelling)
e.  Using a tape recorder.  Let the child tell an experience or describe an event or tell about a book she is reading.  (thinking, comprehension skills)
f.  Using a camera.  Let him write an experience story about the pictures he takes.  (thinking, comprehension skills)
g.  Encouraging a child to begin a collection of stamps, coins, rocks shells etc.  (involves reading, organization, history, geography)
h.  Having a message board.  Both parents and child can write messages.  (teaches organization, writing, time)
i.  Having a child teach an activity to another.  (no better way to learn a skill or gain self-confidence)
j.  Going to the library and letting the child choose books.  (opportunity to see how library is organized e.g. children/adults, books/periodicals, fiction/non-fiction)
k.  Going to the library and choosing story tapes  (develops thinking and listening skills)
l.  Making a list of groceries needed, going to the store, finding the groceries and buying them.  (involves math, reading, thinking, planning, organization)
m.  Sharing a tv program.  Ask the child to explain the main idea or tell about the characters.  (involves thinking, comprehension skills)
n.  Driving in the car.  Point out road signs, billboards.  (uses the outside world for learning)
o.  Taking trips.  Let your child help plan, use maps, look up knowledge about historical places.  (involves reading, planning, organization,math)
p.  Letting the child help to plan and work in garden.  (uses outside world for learning)
q.  Taking your child to a restaurant.  (involves reading, decision making, social experiences)
r.  Taking your child to a movie, concert or play.  (experience in listening, thinking, social behavior)
